Safety · Cape Verde and Boa Vista
Is Cape Verde safe? A local guide to Boa Vista
In short: Cape Verde is one of the calmest countries in Africa and Boa Vista one of its quietest islands. The real risks for holidaymakers are petty theft, the strong sun and currents on some beaches, rather than crime.
Is Cape Verde a safe country?
Yes. Cape Verde is a stable democracy, independent since 1975, with no conflicts or political tension. The travel assistance company International SOS has placed Cape Verde among the few countries in the world with an «insignificant» travel security risk, the only one in Africa, alongside European countries such as Switzerland, Iceland and Norway.
And Boa Vista?
Boa Vista is a small, thinly populated island where everyone knows each other. In Sal Rei people stroll about in the evening, and the resorts and beach areas are relaxed. As in any holiday destination, a little care is enough:
- don’t leave bags, phones or documents unattended on the beach or in the car;
- at night, in poorly lit areas, walk in company or take a taxi;
- carry only the cash you need and use cash machines during the day;
- for desert trips and remote beaches, use reliable guides and rental companies.
The archipelago’s larger towns, Praia and Mindelo, see more petty crime such as bag snatching, especially at night.
The real risks: sun, sea and wind
- Currents and waves: some beaches, especially on the ocean-facing coast, have strong currents. Swim where others swim and follow the advice of lifeguards and hotels.
- Sun: the wind keeps you cool and hides the heat, but the sun is tropical. High-factor sun cream, a hat and water.
- Water: drink bottled water; tap water is desalinated sea water and not for drinking.
- Mosquitoes: after the rains, between August and October, use repellent.
Health and insurance
Sal Rei has a health centre and a few pharmacies; for more serious cases patients are transferred to Sal or Praia, or flown home. So travel with health insurance that also covers repatriation.
